BA REGIONAL MINISTER IMPOUNDS EIGHT ILLEGAL LUMBER


The Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister Lawyer Kwaku Asomah Cheremeh together with his Special Aide,Maxwell Mahama have around 4:00am on Friday Se  impounded Eight (8) trucks of vehicle loaded with illegal lumber smuggling in and out of the country.

The four articulator and four cargo trucks which are alleged to be having an escort by the forestry commission in the region were arrested by  the police at Potor in the Kintampo North district.

The Ghana and Burkina, registered trucks are said to have been loaded from Techiman and was heading towards Navorongo and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.

Mr Asoma Kyeremeh who led the Security and the media to impound the trucks, Sunday dawn hinted that the trucks were arrested upon a tip off .

He said his tremendous quest in stopping the syndicate in the illegal chainsaw operations will continue despite the saboteurs.

Adding that, the forest is depleting at an alarming rate through illegal logging by chainsaw operators , and other harmful practices therefore the need to contain the situation.

However in an interview with the Director at the Timber Inspection Development Division in the region who was alleged to be providing the escort, Mr Opoku Adomako denied the allegation of  escorting but stated the trucks were arrested by the commission at Babator near Kintampo but lack of parking space they were taking them to Buipe in the northern region for parking.

But further checks by the media revealed that there were parking and turning slots at Dawadawa no1, Gulumpe and Kawampe that they could have park or even turn them back if indeed they have been arrested.

The minister stated a thoroughly investigation will be conducted into the matter and has urged opinion leaders in forest rich communities to support the campaign against illegal chainsaw, galamsey and other negative environmental practices.

Through the effort of Minister, the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC), have descended heavily, arrested and retrieved tons of illegal lumbers worth thousands of Ghana Cides for the government.

He admonished Ghanaians to adopt a positive attitude towards the environment in order to protect our future.
